This community is kind of quiet and dead, but I'd rather it not be deleted, so here I am, posting!

Ian has recently had a short story published in the anthology Legends of Australian Fantasy, which I bought but have yet to open the cover of. It looks awesome, though, and is pleasingly thick. It also features a story by Isobelle Carmody, and a bunch of other Aussie fantasy writers I don't know, but will hopefully now Discover.

Just to let people know that I've had to get a new domain for Triune, and you can now find it at http://www.triunelives.co.uk . The forums can be found here.

02:46 pm - Computer game done - needs beta-ing before the 14th
The VFTM mod is now up to the Beta testing stage (phew!) and I need some people to play it and look for aesthetic bugs (as I've ironed out all the component bugs).
A few annoyances:
- the units are made using textural mapping software and can't be changed at all. The only thing I managed to change was the name and armor colour per unit (so, don't be surprised when your construct looks suspiciously like a helicopter)!
- the map (recreating the Southern Hempshpere of Santhenar using fractals is painful) is prety vague for now, since the map editor couldn't handle my fractal input very well. Luckily each game generates either the default Santh map or a randomised one depending on the option you choose, so there is some variety).
- the Special Project videos look dodgy because they were made in the age when Win95 was cutting edge and the game runs on 1024x768x256 colours.
- it only (for now) runs on Windows, but the original SMAC demo is available for macs too.

The full mod download is about 320MB (!) which is pretty small by game standards. I haven't managed to create a torrent yet, but I'll do that for the final version. Click on the "download all" button for the .rar files. If you can't unzip the files you'll have to download the latest copy of "Winrar" or some such program.

It should be totally playable whether you have SMAC or not and it will not crash your system. Trust me.

07:00 pm - Community layout
Is anyone else having trouble reading the links on this comm? The visited ones are OK, but the unvisited ones are a really pale green colour that fades perfectly into the pale green background. Is there any chance of making them darker so they're legible?

12:43 am - Competition!
Meant to post this a week ago, but I've been busy and I totally forgot. I'm running a competition at Triune to win one of three sets of signed books: VFTM, WOE, and the Human Rites series. Head on over to the site for details, the closing date is the 19th of April.

After [info]angelofsnow  found an lj-icon customizer, I couldn't resist fiddling with it, then improving the pics to suit my pedantic nature on Photostudio.   So far I have:

In other news, I have begun a VFTM mod of Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri which is a role-playing strategy game for Win95 and above. The faction files are finished and I am busy customising the vehicles and technologies. Firaxis advises gamers to "modify these files at your own risk" so as far as I know there is nothing illegal about it (there are plenty of disclaimers and it is non-profit anyway). There are some screenshots at my journal however they are noisy due to my screencapping program. :(

Has anyone picked up Torments of the Traitor yet? (Or 'Fate of the Fallen' as I read it's been released in the UK)
I found out about it purely by accident last Sunday while shopping (followed by "OMGWTFYAY THIS WASN'T SUPPOSED TO BE OUT UNTIL OCTOBER!!!" in the middle of the book store), and plowed through it that afternoon. =3 I really enjoyed it. Will avoid spoilers here, but feel free to chat about it with me in the comments! =D

03:27 pm - Writings...
Whether or not you're a fan of Harry Potter, the fanbase is often so involved they put Trekkies to shame. On LJ for instance, you'll find plenty of fanfic communities, icon communities, RP communities, and all sorts of fanbase groups. Being someone who's trying to get into writing, I thought why not start a writing community about my favourite book series'? If anyone else is interested in posting drabbles, episodic stories or short stories based on Aachan, Tallallame, Santhenar or in the void Drop me a line here. I will be setting up the community soon, if I get enough expressions of interest.

On a side note, Anyone else here also a member at carcharon.com?

Has anyone read Irvine's new younger readers book? Just wanted to know what people thought of it, since my funds are running reeeeally low at the moment. I saw it in the shops the other day and did a quick skim of the blurb, but don't know whether it's definitely worth owning, or if I should wait to hire it out from the library. Read something about a wizardry school on the blurb and was a little put off. ;>_> I loaths the Harry Potter. Anyway, yeah, what're everyones thoughts?

03:43 pm - Runcible Jones and Song of the Tears
I got this email from Ian today (about five times, actually, which was amusing. Seemed to be having trouble with his email).

You might be interested in the first book of my Runcible Jones fantasy
quintet for slightly younger readers (and older ones too, for that matter).
It¹s called Runcible Jones The Gate to Nowhere, it¹s just been published (in
Australia) and if you¹re interested you can find out more it, plus
competitions, giveaways, artwork and (shortly), animations etc at

http://www.runciblejones.com.au

and

http://www.ian-irvine.com

In other news, I¹m about to deliver the first book of the new Three Worlds
series to my editor. It¹s called The Song of the Tears and it¹ll be
appearing around October.

And for those in the area, I'm doing a signing at Angus & Robertson in Pitt
St Mall, Sydney, on Friday 20th January 2006, 12.30-2.30 pm.

Cheers

Ian Irvine

I don't know when Runcible is coming out in the UK (which is where I am right now, and will be until the end of June) - if its not before April I think I will have to put it on my birthday list.

And OF COURSE he is doing a signing in Sydney, WHEN I AM NOT THERE. *smile, sigh*

But OMG YAY OCTOBER!!! *dances*
